Ajmal attempts  to come up in a new action

Saeed Ajmal had delivered 18887 balls in his 2251-day long international career before he was banned for an illegal action. Forced to undertake remedial work, Ajmal has been rigorously practising bowling with a straight elbow to get his arm used to it, and by his own admission, has repeated a drill around 7000 times in the last three weeks.
ESPNcricinfo observed the drill at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore where Ajmal has been working with Saqlain Mushtaq to remodel his action. Bowling with a slightly side-on action, Ajmal rolls his arm over but does not release the ball. The idea is to swing his arm and reduce the flexion of the elbow. The routine has been followed for two sessions every day, with two cameras recording the movements from the front and the back and a speed gun installed to measure his arm speed.
Ajmal is likely to continue working at the NCA with Saqlain for the next three weeks before he is sent to England for an independent bio-mechanical assessment and further remedial work. Based on the results, Ajmal can apply to the ICC for a reassessment. Although the ICC ban does not stop Ajmal from bowling in domestic cricket, the bowler had skipped the start of the season to focus on reworking his action.
Ajmal was reported after the first Test of Pakistan's tour of Sri Lanka in Galle this August. The subsequent testing of his action at an ICC-accredited facility at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane found his average elbow extension was more than twice the permissible limit.

New Captain Target Winning Start

Big Picture

A one-off Twenty20 match might have some relevance in the lead-up to the World T20, but with the next world tournament not scheduled until 2016, this is a game with little riding on it. Still, with a one-day series to follow and then Tests between the two countries, it is a chance for either Pakistan or Australia to begin their tour on a positive note. And both teams will be led by new captains, providing a chance for a regeneration of sorts after neither side made it past the group stage of the World T20 in Bangladesh earlier this year.
The resignation of Mohammad Hafeez has allowed Shahid Afridi to regain charge of Pakistan, having last led their T20 side in 2011, while Aaron Finch is taking over from George Bailey as captain of Australia. There have also been plenty of changes for both teams from the World T20 squads, and most notably Pakistan will sorely miss offspinner Saeed Ajmal, who is the leading wicket taker in T20 international history but has been banned from bowling due to an illegal action. In 11 T20s against Australia, Ajmal has taken 19 wickets at 14.26.
Australia's squad has been compromised by the priority given to the Champions League T20 final, with Pat Cummins still in India instead of having the chance to play his first international for two years. There could be as many as five debutants in Australia's outfit as they search not only for a team that can take them through to the next World T20, but more immediately and practically, for 11 fit players.

In the spotlight

Raza Hasan took 2 for 15 off four overs on his T20 international debut against Australia at this venue two years ago. However, he has not played for his country since October 2012 and now faces the prospect of playing as the frontline spinner instead of support act to Ajmal. It is a wonderful opportunity for Hasan, but equally, the expectations on him will be great.
Australia's long list of post-Warne spinners in Test cricket has been well documented, but the catalogue of T20 tweakers used is also growing rapidly. In the past two years alone, Xavier Doherty, Fawad Ahmed, Brad Hogg and James Muirhead have been used as frontline spinners, with Glenn Maxwell the slow-bowling allrounder. Now, Cameron Boyce will be added to the list. The legspinner will make his debut after his Hobart Hurricanes failed to reach the CLT20 final, and it is a big opportunity for Boyce. The previous captain George Bailey said on his departure that finding a world class T20 spinner was the one thing that over the next couple of years could lift Australia to the elite level in the short format.

Team news

A shake-up to Pakistan's T20 squad could mean barely half the men who played in their most recent game will feature in this match. Awais Zia and Raza Hasan look set to make their first T20 appearances in more than two years, while Wahab Riaz is back in the squad having not played a T20 international since April 2011. The loss of Mohammad Hafeez to a hand injury sustained at training is a blow.
Pakistan (possible) 1 Ahmed Shahzad, 2 Awais Zia, 3 Umar Amin, 4 Umar Akmal (wk), 5 Shahid Afridi, 6 Sohaib Maqsood, 7 Bilawal Bhatti, 8 Raza Hasan, 9 Sohail Tanvir, 10 Wahab Riaz, 11 Mohammad Irfan.
Australia named a 13-man squad for this match, but have only 10 men from that group available. Shane Watson was withdrawn due to his calf injury, Mitchell Marsh is sidelined with a hamstring problem and Pat Cummins is still in India with Kolkata Knight Riders for the Champions League final. It has forced the selectors to add Phillip Hughes, Nathan Lyon and Steve O'Keefe to the squad from the ODI and Test groups. Allrounder Sean Abbott, legspinner Cameron Boyce and fast bowler Kane Richardson are all likely to make their debuts.
Australia (possible) 1 Aaron Finch (capt), 2 David Warner, 3 Phillip Hughes, 4 Glenn Maxwell, 5 Steven Smith, 6 Brad Haddin (wk), 7 James Faulkner, 8 Sean Abbott, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Kane Richardson, 11 Cameron Boyce.

Pitch and conditions

Australian Tony Hemming, the curator of the Dubai ground, has already foreshadowed some reasonable pace and bounce for the Test at the venue, so there may not be as much spin in this T20 as might have been expected. The forecast for Sunday is 37C, although the temperature should drop to the lower 30s by the time the game starts.
Stats and trivia
  • Australia have beaten Pakistan only four times from 12 meetings in this format
  • Aaron Finch will become Australia's seventh captain in the format, after Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, Michael Clarke, Brad Haddin, Cameron White and George Bailey
  • The two leading wicket takers of all time in T20 internationals are Saeed Ajmal and Umar Gul, but neither will be playing in this game

Quotes

"With Ajmal gone out, things are different now and we have to really think hard as a bunch and not as one individual like Ajmal winning us games"
Waqar Younis, the Pakistan coach

Narine withdraw from India tour

The WICB has decided to withdraw offspinner Sunil Narine from the entire India tour. The West Indies board later sent a press release stating that Narine had been withdrawn to allow him "the opportunity to have his action assessed and plan his return to cricket". The decision to stand down Narine leaves West Indies with no specialist spinner for the one-dayers against India. A replacement player is yet to be named.
Clive Lloyd, the West Indies chairman of selectors, was unhappy with the Champions League T20's procedure for dealing with suspect actions. "I am disappointed that our best bowler could suddenly be out of the tour," he said. "I am quite disappointed about the procedure that surrounded the 'calling' of Sunil in the Champions Trophy tournament. These things have the potential to disrupt the team's preparation for a critical series against India but we will have to overcome this hurdle."
From October 8, West Indies will play five ODIs and a T20 against India, before three Tests. Narine's bowling ban is restricted only to the Champions League and other BCCI-run tournaments like the IPL, but the decision to remove him from the tour means scrutiny on him has now extended into international cricket as well.
Narine's absence will be more immediately felt by his IPL team, Kolkata Knight Riders, who will be without their best bowler in Saturday's CLT20 final against Chennai Super Kings. The Knight Riders management was surprised with the umpires' ruling on Narine, particularly the fact that two days after his faster delivery was reported, his action for several deliveries was termed suspect.
However, Venky Mysore, Knight Riders' CEO, said that the franchise would comply with the measures recommended by BCCI, so that Narine can bowl in BCCI-run tournaments like the IPL. Mysore said he did not want to question the authority of the umpires. "Those are the rules. We accept that. We will be very supportive of everything that Sunil wants to do," Mysore said. "If WICB reaches out, we are always there to support them. We are going to miss him in the final, but we are there to do everything to support him as we don't want his career to get affected.
"I have to say the timing is surprising and so is the fact that he was the only one called twice in the tournament. But we will do everything to help him to put this behind him."

Hand injury sidelines Hafeez for two weeks

Mohammad Hafeez, the Pakistan allrounder, has been ruled out for two weeks after sustaining a hand injury. He injured the webbing between the thumb and index finger on his left hand during fielding practice and will miss both the T20 and ODI series against Australia.
"While playing the second practice game at Sharjah on Oct. 3, Hafeez received an injury in his left palm webbing which required five stitches," a PCB media release said. "The physio's report suggested minimum two weeks rest, which ruled him out of the limited-overs part of the series against Australia. The team management had thus unanimously decided that there was no point in retaining him on the tour."
Hafeez's absence means Pakistan will be without two key spinners, with Saeed Ajmal already banned from bowling in international cricket. They will also miss his top-order batting, prompting the PCB to name two replacements for him in the squad.
Sami Aslam, the opener who captained Pakistan at the Under-19 World Cup earlier this year, and 35-year-old left-arm spinner Zulfiqar Babar have been added to the squad. Aslam is already in the UAE with the Pakistan A squad and will join the senior team immediately while Babar, who is currently in Pakistan, is likely to miss Sunday's one-off Twenty20 and be available for the one-dayers.
While Aslam is yet to make his international debut, Babar played a couple of Tests in 2013 and was part of the squad for the World Twenty20 earlier this year.
The series against Australia begins with a Twenty20 on Sunday, followed by three ODIs over the next week.
